Here it is, the summer season of sun and sunglasses. You'll probably want to buy a smashing shades as they days will get sunnier or warmer. But there's a lot more to glass than only flash. Sunglasses can give maximum protection to eyes from the harmful rays of sunlight.
Following are the some facts given by vision specialist Richard Young.
RAY-DIATION
As soon as you get out on a sunny day, your eyes squint. Young said that it is the natural reaction of your eyes of protection from the damages from sunlight. While sunglasses can be categorized as human created way of looking stylish and protecting eyes.
All sunglasses are able to reduce the glare and screen out some harmful UV rays, Young explains. In actuality we cannot see those rays which can seriously damage our eyes. SO in order to keep your eyes healthy and wide open in sunlight you should get block invisible sunlight UV rays.
We should start doing this as soon as we get to know this, he says. Especially, when we are spending most of our time outside and we are constantly exposed to the rays of sun. That’s the time when eyes are most prone to sun damages.
Till we are 20, Young explains, the cornea and lens allow UV rays to pass through. As the rays fasten, they damages molecules in the structure or retina which leave the tiny scars. As time passes, these damages hoard. So when we hit our 70s, our lenses might be fully fogged up causing cataracts. In cataracts, it means you might be blind as no light can pass through.
If there is any doubt that UV rays might cause loss of sight, check the new animal data of South America, says Young. Rigorous reduction of Earth’s UV-absorbing ozone, this allows increase in the absorption of UV rays. Scientists are busy in finding whether sheep and cows which spend their maximum time in grazing under the harmful rays are experiencing blindness.
"Now is the time of prevention," say Young. So buy a pair of sunglasses, as putting sunglasses on a sheep may sound silly. Young recommends that you should wear whenever you are out in sun, it might not protect 100 % but it will definitely protect your eyes from UV rays.
LABEL FABLES
"It's very easy to make your sunglasses resistant to UV light," Young says. The manufacturers do simple thing like dipping the lens in the tub of hot dye for only couple of minutes. This will help in absorbing the harmful UV wavelengths when light pass through the lens.
"But it’s impossible to tell whether the sunglasses you have or going to buy are protective to the UV or not!!” Young says. Instead, you must read the labels.
But there is another problem that all sunglasses do not have labels; there is no law which says they should. But there are manufacturers who follow voluntary standards which are set by sunglasses industry and also the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. According to these standards, every type of "cosmetic" lens can let through 30 percent of UVB rays. Which include those UV rays which are most powerful and harmful, warns Young.
So the general purpose sunglasses should be really good for those who have constant sun exposure, it blocks up to 95 percent of UVB rays. That means that only 5% of the UVB can pass (along with some 40 percent of the less energetic UVA rays).
“I’m still concern as I am not satisfied with this protection”, says Young. He suggested that the sunglasses which have a label of UV-400 should be bought as this strong UV protective lens will absorb all the potential damaging wavelength of UV rays.
